Blue Whale

Blue whale scientific name is Balaenoptera musculus. The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet. And also known as sulfur-bottom whale. These magnificent marine mammals rule the oceans at up to 100 feet long and upwards of 200 tons. They are the loudest animals on Earth and are even louder than a jet engine. Blue whales swim individually or in small groups. The blue whale has a heart the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Blue whales must eat two to four tons of krill a day during the feeding season. Blue whales can also be harmed by ship strikes and by becoming entangled in fishing gear.

Sperm Whale

The sperm whale belongs to the suborder of toothed whales and dolphins (odontocetes) and is one of the easiest whales to identify at sea. Sperm whales can dive to 3000 feet (915 meters) in pursuit of giant squid, their primary prey. The sperm whale is one of the deepest diving mammals in the world. Typically it makes dives of up to 400 m, but can reach depths of up to 2-3km. Male sperm whales grow to about 60 feet (18.3 meters) while female sperm whales grow to approximately 43 feet (13.1 meters) long. Male and female sperm whales have huge, squarish foreheads, small inconspicuous eyes, and a long narrow lower jaw.

Fin Whale

The fin whaleThe fin whale is the second largest animal in the world. It is found throughout the world’s oceans. The fin whale is long, sleek, and streamlined, with a V-shaped head which is flat on top. They can move at a top speed of about 25 miles per hour.It is a migratory species that spends the winter months in temperate mid-latitude waters where it gives birth and mates and then it migrates to higher latitudes for intensive summer feeding. Fin whales have a very unusual feature. They can move at a top speed of about 25 miles per hour.

Common Dolphin

The Common Dolphin is very social, and they live in large groups called pods. They can reach swimming speeds of around 30 miles per hour when chasing food or bowriding alongside boats. The common dolphin has very distinctive colouring, forming an hourglass pattern on its side. The common dolphin feeds on squid and small schooling fish. Short-beaked common dolphins typically travel in large social groups numbering between 10 and 50 animals, and occasionally, thousands of individuals.

Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose dolphins are light to dark gray over their dorsal surface, fading into a white or cream along their ventral region. They have a streamlined fusiform body shape. The Bottlenose Dolphin is found throughout the world's oceans, apart from at the poles. The bottlenose dolphins travel in groups, called “pods“, of around 10-15. Bottlenose dolphins are found in warm water all over the world. Bottlenose dolphins have the longest social memories of any nonhuman species.

Risso's dolphins are typically found in groups of between 10 and 30 animals, though they have been reported as solitary individuals, in pairs, or in loose aggregations in the hundreds or thousands. Risso’s Dolphins are found worldwide in temperate and tropical waters. The stomachs of stranded dolphins in the Mediterranean contained only the remains of cephalopods from 25 different species.

The Striped Dolphin is easily recognized by the dark blue stripe that runs from their dark coloured rostrum, around their eye, and down along their side to their rear flank. Striped dolphins travel in groups, typically numbering from a few dozen to 500 animals, but herds numbering in the thousands are sometimes reported. Male striped dolphins can reach lengths of about 9 feet and weigh up to 350 pounds, while females can reach up to 8 feet and 330 pounds.
